Inlays and onlays

Inlays are lab fabricated restorations that restore a portion of a tooth surrounded by healthy tooth structure on most sides.

Inlays (often ceramic) are utilized when more strength is needed than a composite restoration can provide.

Onlays are lab fabricated restorations that restore a larger portion of missing tooth structure including a portion of the external tooth structure (often referred to as cusps).

If significant tooth structure is missing (including one or more cusps), an onlay (often ceramic) may be the ideal restoration if there is sufficient remaining healthy tooth structure to ensure a predictable long term prognosis.  If not, a full coverage crown may be the ideal restoration.
